Fighting Hunger, Reducing Food Waste, Changing Lives.

Did you know that approximately 20 million South Africans go to bed hungry every night, while 10.3 million tonnes of food go to waste annually?



 is tackling this crisis head on – rescuing perfectly good surplus food and redirecting it to where it’s needed most. Since 2019, they’ve been working to end hunger through food rescue, education, and long-term sustainability.

To help shift this devastating reality, The Star Foundation has committed R3,18 million to support SA Harvest’s mission. This funding will be used to:

Deliver food weekly to over 300+ community-based organizations (CBOs) across South Africa, including TSF partner beneficiaries such as 

Cover critical essential costs such as logistics, warehousing, fuel and distribution to maintain and expand their reach.

Implement digital reporting to track meal distribution, nutritional value and beneficiary reach.

Support long-term food security by easing the burden on CBO’s so they can redirect resources towards education, infrastructure, and community development.

Together, we’re creating a future where no food goes to waste, and - no one is left behind. 

Since launching in 2019, SA Harvest has rescued 21.27 million kilograms of surplus food – enough to provide more than 83.72 million nutritious meals to vulnerable communities in South Africa.

Homelessness is one of South Africa’s most pressing social challenges, leaving thousands without access to shelter, basic services, or opportunities for change.

At The Star Foundation, we believe that every individual in our society deserves to live a life full of dignity. We’ve partnered with 

 to support their proven Life Change Journey – a four-phase programme that offers individuals living on the streets a pathway out of homelessness and toward employment and independence4.those who live on the street a pathway out of homelessness and towards employment and independence.

Over the last 25 years, U-turn has crafted an innovative skills-based programme to overcome homelessness, designed by a multidisciplinary team of Occupational Therapists, Social workers, homeless support workers, counsellors, trainers and life coaches.

Our partnership focuses on the first two- and most critical – phases of this journey, which U-turn operates out of dedicated” Homeless Service Centres.” As the point of first contact with homeless individuals, these centres offer a safe space where they can begin their journey off the streets.

The Service Centres are sites where basic services are provided to meet the needs of those who need them most. Food, clothing, and hygiene services are available to clients while professional teams of therapeutic specialists offer group and individual counselling designed to build motivation in homeless clients to make the necessary life and behavioural changes needed to enrol further in homeless recovery support.

The Star Foundation is investing nearly R2 million in 2025 to fund the annual operations of two U-Turn Homeless Service Centres in Cape Town: The

. These centres provide safe, supportive spaces where individuals receive trauma counselling, skills training, and structured support to enable, build, and restore dignity among the most vulnerable in our communities.

U-Turn

Breaking The Cycle Of Homelessness

“What started out as a playground has become a lifeline for an entire community.”

Nestled in the heart of Hout Bay, Cape Town, Little Angels is a beacon of hope for the community. Founded by Liezl Mathews in 2011, what began as a simple playground to keep her nephews and nieces safe off the streets has grown into a vital community hub offering a crèche, pre-school, aftercare program, youth support initiative, feeding scheme, and a safe house for women and children.

Despite the incredible impact Little Angels has on the lives of hundreds of families, the organization receives no stable funding or government support. Their limited income from the crèche and other small initiatives is inconsistent, leaving them with a significant budget shortfall. This financial strain has forced them to reduce their capacity across critical programme areas and places them at risk of losing staff, while also preventing necessary maintenance to make the centre warm, safe, and fully functional.

This is where The Star Foundation has stepped in. With the generous support of funds donated by the 1609 Group, we are contributing R200,000 monthly to help little Angels restore their ability to operate at full capacity. In addition, we've helped them become a recognised CBO beneficiary with S.A. Harvest, enabling weekly deliveries of perishable and non-perishable food — a lifeline that directly improves food security in the community.

Our support extends beyond meals, helping ensure that Little Angels has the essential resources to continue serving the community with dignity and care. From educational tools to basic necessities and staff development, we’re committed to strengthening their foundation -with more on this shared in our journey tab.

A Lifeline Of Hope

"Building a Culture of Wellbeing in Schools: Helping young learners overcome instability and overwhelming challenges."

For many young learners, each day is a battle against instability and overwhelming challenges, leaving them in a constant state of fear or stress due to experiences such as loss, neglect, and exposure to abuse, violence, or poverty. The Star Foundation, in partnership with Community Keepers are dedicated to breaking this cycle and providing meaningful mental health support.

In the heart of Bonnievale, there exists a quiet struggle—one that is not seen but deeply felt by the children of seasonal farmworkers. They wake up to hardship, arrive at school with heavy hearts, and return home to an environment where their struggles persist. These learners have no access to mental health care services or resources to assist them in coping with the traumas they are exposed to daily.

When trauma is left unaddressed, it can lead to high-risk behaviours, school dropouts, and an ongoing cycle that is difficult to escape. At The Star Foundation, we believe no child should face these struggles alone. That’s why, in partnership with Community Keepers, we launched a 12-month campaign to support the implementation of psycho-social support services in 11 schools in the Bonnievale region of the Western Cape – reaching 3,377 learners and their caregivers.

s a non-profit organization focused on improving mental health in schools. They provide counselling and life skills programs to create a lasting culture of wellbeing. Through their well-established 

Counselling, Anchoring, Resilience, and Environment of Care

 – learners receive vital on-site support at school. Trained Care Facilitators provide immediate emotional support, while professional Care Practitioners (such as social workers, counsellors and psychologists) offer specialized help for more complex cases.

The Star Foundation is proud to be contributing R500,000, with funding support from the 1609 Group. Helping the implementation of this vital programme in Bonnievale– to ensure that mental health support becomes a consistent, accessible resource in the lives of the learners who need it most. By providing a safe space and the right tools to ensure wellbeing, the partnership will help children process trauma, heal, and start dreaming again.

to provide scholarships for 10 gifted scholars from under-served communities to attend prestigious high schools in the Western Cape.

The impact – life changing! These young minds have the potential to do incredible things and with the support of Crew for A Cause, we are thrilled to turn their dreams into reality. By funding their high school journeys from Grade 8 to Matric, The Star Foundation is ensuring that these scholars receive the education they deserve, which in turn, will uplift their families and inspire their communities, proving that a single act of kindness can ripple through generations.

Crew for A Cause was founded in 2017 when 15 friends came together as a “Crew” to each contribute a small amount every month to the school fees of a single student.

Since then, the crew has grown to 310 members who collectively support a growing network of over 25 scholars across 10 schools. The Star Foundation’s annual donation will see the number grow to over 35 fully funded scholarships in 2025.

World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) takes place on February 5th each year, and this year The Star Foundation is celebrating with the exciting announcement of our partnership with 

. Each year, WRAD is dedicated to highlighting the importance of reading aloud and promoting literacy across all ages by encouraging people to share stories with others in schools, homes, and their communities. This aligns perfectly with Help2read’s mission of ending illiteracy in South Africa by fostering a love for reading and storytelling.

In 2021, the Progress in International Reading Study (PIRLS) revealed that 81% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa could not read for meaning in any language. The consequences of low literacy levels are profound, limiting children’s ability to progress through school and become youth who contribute positively to the communities in which they live and the country’s economy. Help2read is tacking this issue by providing one-on-one support to children in public schools who struggle to read. Through consistent literacy input, reading help and fun activities, children in the programme not only learn to read, they fall in love with reading.

We are proud to share that we will be funding Help2read’s inspiring work in Gauteng throughout 2025 by collaborating to bring the proven success of their well-established literacy programme to children in two under-resourced schools in Diepsloot and Refilwe. But that’s not all… The programme’s impact extends far beyond the classroom and provides solutions to critical challenges faced by South African communities which demand urgent and impactful action.

One such challenge is that of unemployment among South African youth, and particularly young, black women. A staggering 39.2% of this marginalised demographic could not find meaningful employment in 2024. Alongside their reading support projects, Help2read’s approach provides first work experiences for unemployed young women (aged 18-25) from the townships in which the schools are situated.

With The Star Foundation’s donation, Help2read will implement six inter-related projects throughout the year. You can find out more about these in “the Journey” tab. In an impressive whole-of-community approach, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives:

Improve literacy rates of 320+ primary school learners and lay the foundations of early literacy among 300+ children from Early Learning centres in the township communities where the schools are located.

Equip 23 young women with valuable work experience and both personal and professional development. At the end of the programme, these women will be equipped with the skills they need to find meaningful employment.

Strengthen community ties by engaging parents to join their children’s literacy journeys at home and through other collaborative initiatives.

Together with Help2read, we are thrilled to embark on an inspiring 11-month journey to strengthen community cohesion, empower the youth, and build the nation’s ability to read for meaning. Since its inception in 2005, Help2read has reached 420 schools, trained and employed 675 young people, and assisted 40 000 children with reading support.

Collaboration is central to tackling the literacy crisis in South Africa, and we at The Star Foundation are ready to play our part. Together with Help2read, it is our privilege to contribute to building a future filled with opportunity- one book, one child, one woman, and one community at a time. Literacy Support Partnership

The Star Foundation, known for its commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those facing adversity, has recently taken a remarkable step by contributing to 

, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting children in acquiring prosthetic equipment after amputation, for the next 12-months.

Every month, a child will receive a donation of R50,000 that will go towards their prosthetic leg.

Childhood amputation can be an overwhelming experience for both children and their families. Jumping Kids transforms the lives of these young individuals, providing them with the support they need to overcome physical challenges and prosthetic equipment so that they may live their lives to the fullest, like other children.

The Star Foundation's contribution goes beyond financial support. It’s about commitment to creating opportunities for children who have faced losing a limb and having their mobility restored.

Families who were once burdened by the challenges of amputation now find solace and hope as their children receive support from Jumping Kids, supported by The Star Foundation.

As we observe The Star Foundation's contribution to Jumping Kids, it is an opportunity for us all to reflect on the impact of shaping a brighter future. The simple act of providing prosthetic equipment becomes a catalyst for empowerment, resilience, and the reaffirmation that every child deserves a chance to soar, jump, and dream without limitations.

In September 2022, The Star Foundation proudly launched a five-year In-School Breakfast Programme in collaboration with 

Foundation starting in the Hazyview district of Mpumalanga.

What began as a bold initiative to address child hunger and improve school performance has grown into a powerful vehicle for change currently supporting eight primary schools and reaching over 7,500 learners in the Elanzheni District.

But our mission goes beyond nutrition. We believe that every bowl of breakfast is a building block for a better future. By nourishing young learners each morning, we're helping sharpen focus, improve attendance, and support academic achievement.

The programme is also a driver of community upliftment. Through accredited training and employment opportunities, we’ve empowered 45 local community members to serve as Food Handlers and Food Monitors. These roles offer valuable skills, income, and a renewed sense of purpose — reinforcing our commitment to long-term social and economic development in the region.

Together, with Tiger Brands, we’re building more than meals — we’re building momentum for change.
