Skills development and upliftment within the local community

The launch event in Hazyview, Mpumalanga on September 19, 2023, was a truly heartwarming and memorable occasion. It marked the start of a transformative journey, poised to make a significant and lasting impact on the lives of school children.

Sustained Impact and Community Empowerment

Ongoing for five years, providing meals to children on school days and creating employment within the community through school monitors and food handlers. 

Additionally, we will build kitchens for the schools during the program's duration and offer continuous training for the food handlers and monitors, ensuring long-term benefits and empowerment.

At Celani Primary School in Mpumalanga, Grade 5 learner Siphelele Malele is proving that leadership has no age.

Thanks to our in-school breakfast program with 

, 7,713 learners across eight schools start their day with a healthy breakfast. But Siphelele is going the extra mile.

When the school faced a water shortage earlier this year, he took it upon himself to ensure his class had clean water for handwashing each morning. He arrives early every day, fills the water bucket, and sets out placemats and utensils—always with a smile.

When asked why he does it, he simply said:


“We eat breakfast to grow and get energy for the day. So, to grow, we must eat and take care of our utensils!”

His actions have inspired other learners to do the same—turning one small act into a school-wide culture of care and responsibility.

Because when children are nourished, they don’t just learn better, they lead better.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Who knew it could be life-changing? 

’ In-School breakfast program, we’re doing just that across eight schools in Mpumalanga. This initiative is not only nourishing young learners but also changing lives.

In January 2025, both Makhosazane Primar and Wandile Mathebula two dedicated food monitors from Mpunzana and Mtimba Primary Schools secured permanent employment thanks to the skills gained through this programme. One has joined the team at Kruger National Park, while the other balances a new job with part-time higher education.

By equipping young individuals with practical skills, hands-on experience and accredited food handler training, we are giving them the tools to build a better future. Their training certificates have strengthened their CVs and boosted their employability.

We couldn’t be prouder of their success, and we remain committed to empowering more young people through our initiatives.

Impact Beyond a Meal - Creating Career Opportunities

 is on a mission to change lives one meal at a time with the In-school Breakfast Programme. The programme is set to take place in 8 schools in the Elanzheni District, Mpumalanga, feeding 7,555 learners every school day.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it improves attention span, problem-solving skills, overall mental performance and as well as better school attendance.

The programme will run for 5 years. You can follow the journey and the incredible impact it will have on the learner’s and the community of Ehlazheni District.

Hlobisile Ngomani, Monitor from Chweni Primary School said “Since the breakfast programme from the first day I started to be part of it, it has been a good opportunity for me because I am learning new things daily. In terms of interpersonal communication and development, interacting with the kids daily improves my problem-solving skills. Being part of the programme makes me understand people’s perspectives differently, and going forward I am willing to learn more from it.”

LottoStar’s -The Star Foundation, in collaboration with The Tiger Brands Foundation have launched an in-school breakfast programme. 

Feeding minds & fueling success - Our In-School Breakfast Programme

In September 2022, The Star Foundation proudly launched a five-year In-School Breakfast Programme in collaboration with 

Foundation starting in the Hazyview district of Mpumalanga.

What began as a bold initiative to address child hunger and improve school performance has grown into a powerful vehicle for change currently supporting eight primary schools and reaching over 7,500 learners in the Elanzheni District.

But our mission goes beyond nutrition. We believe that every bowl of breakfast is a building block for a better future. By nourishing young learners each morning, we're helping sharpen focus, improve attendance, and support academic achievement.

The programme is also a driver of community upliftment. Through accredited training and employment opportunities, we’ve empowered 45 local community members to serve as Food Handlers and Food Monitors. These roles offer valuable skills, income, and a renewed sense of purpose — reinforcing our commitment to long-term social and economic development in the region.

Together, with Tiger Brands, we’re building more than meals — we’re building momentum for change.
