Change doesn’t start when someone leaves the streets — it starts when they have somewhere to go.

For some, it starts with something as simple as a warm meal after days without one. For others, it’s their first conversation with a counsellor.

In 2026, The Star Foundation continues its partnership with U-turn Homeless Ministries by funding the Strand Homeless Service Centre in Cape Town, a critical first step for people beginning their journey out of homelessness.

As the first point of contact for many experiencing homelessness, the centre provides a safe and supportive space where change can begin. Here, support is practical, from meals, clothing, and hygiene facilities to counselling and voucher earning activities that help build routine, restore dignity, and encourage responsibility.

What makes this space powerful is what happens over time.

Through ongoing support and guidance, people begin to rebuild stability, regain confidence and dignity, and take practical steps toward life beyond the streets.

The partnership focuses on the first two and most critical phases of U Turn’s programme, helping people move from immediate relief and support toward greater stability and independence.

It plays a vital role in a community with very limited services for people experiencing homelessness.

For many, it’s the first time in a long time that change feels possible.
