Zakheni FM, established in 2013, is an educational project based in Orlando West (Soweto), whose key focus is on primary school learners, from grades 1 -7.
They are focused on supporting children to achieve greater success academically, focusing on STEM and literacy.
Zakheni runs afterschool and weekly programmes for the learners, providing them with supervised homework, extra lessons and support, sports and recreation, arts and culture, drama and dance as well as life skills, health awareness, teamwork and mentorship.
The Star Foundation will be donating necessary stationery for homework and groceries that will be used as afternoon supplementary meals for the learners.
In honour of Literacy Month we will be donating 100 books to promote the love of reading to the 100 learners, this way, they can not only enjoy their own books but also potentially share and exchange them with their peers, hopefully creating a love for reading, improve literacy levels and establish a reading culture.
We have selected Bibionefsa (
https://www.biblionefsa.org.za/) as the supplier of these books, as they are a social enterprise and with every book sold they are able to supply other communities and children in need.
On the morning of the handover, we will be hosting a quiz with snacks and drinks that foster excitement and a love of knowledge and learning.
