In the wake of staggering gender-based violence (GBV) statistics in South Africa, many women and children have suffered neglect, abuse, trauma, and homelessness, highlighting a severe crisis.
The Frida Hartley Shelter, situated in Yeoville, Johannesburg, takes in homeless women and children who have endured neglect, abuse and the trauma leaving them homeless. They shelter individuals from all walks of life. Some have lost their jobs and are now struggling to make ends meet. Others are young mothers wanting to kick-start their lives.
The shelter was established in 1922 and catered to single mothers who were stigmatized for being pregnant and unmarried.
Essentially, the non-profit organization’s (NPO) objective is to empower women by providing them with accommodation, psychological support, toiletries, training and employment opportunities. There are childcare services for children who are housed at the shelter with their parents.
By empowering the women, they are able to regain their dignity. As a result, they become independent and able to support themselves and their children adequately.
