Fighting Hunger, Reducing Food Waste, Changing Lives
Did you know that approximately 20 million South Africans go to bed hungry every night, while 10.3 million tonnes of food go to waste annually?
SA Harvest is tackling this crisis head on – rescuing perfectly good surplus food and redirecting it to where it’s needed most. Since 2019, they’ve been working to end hunger through food rescue, education, and long-term sustainability.
To help shift this devastating reality, The Star Foundation has committed R3,18 million to support SA Harvest’s mission. This funding will be used to:
- Deliver food weekly to over 300+ community-based organizations (CBOs) across South Africa, including TSF partner beneficiaries such as U-turn Homeless Ministries and Little Angels.
- Cover critical essential costs such as logistics, warehousing, fuel and distribution to maintain and expand their reach.
- Implement digital reporting to track meal distribution, nutritional value and beneficiary reach.
- Support long-term food security by easing the burden on CBO’s so they can redirect resources towards education, infrastructure, and community development.
Together, we’re creating a future where no food goes to waste, and - no one is left behind.
SA Harvest’s impactSince launching in 2019, SA Harvest has rescued 21.27 million kilograms of surplus food – enough to provide more than 83.72 million nutritious meals to vulnerable communities in South Africa.
Together, we are changing lives—one rescued meal at a time.
